Bus crash injuries: How to stay safer when you ride

On Behalf of | May 21, 2018 | Uncategorized

You never had a reason to use a bus before, but you’ve decided to start using public transportation more often. It saves gas and means you don’t even have to own a vehicle if you prefer not to. It’s a good alternative to having a car if you are on a great bus route in your city.

There are some things you should know about bus safety, though, because you are putting your life into another driver’s hands. Although buses are generally safe, it’s a good idea to know ways to keep yourself and other passengers safe while on board.

1. Report anything unusual immediately

As a passenger, you must keep in mind that you do have some power in preventing crashes. For starters, you should look at the bus before you get on board. If you notice something unusual, like a flat tire or damage to the bus, say something. Even if it turns out to be nothing, it’s better to check that the bus is in appropriate shape to drive.

Another thing to do is to say hello to the bus driver. If he or she appears tired or becomes unwell during the trip, you or other passengers should ask him or her to pull over. Your diligence could save lives.

2. Stow your bags

Another thing that prevents injuries if a crash does happen is stowing your bags away. Yes, you can draw or read a book, but having anything out of your bags that isn’t stowed creates a potential projectile in a crash. Pencils become like spears, phones feel like bricks when they strike you. Keep this in mind and limit how many items you use at one time while tethering down or stowing your other bags.

3. Wear your seat belt

Even though it’s generally not required on buses because of compartmentalization, it’s a good idea to wear a seat belt. If the bus is in a crash and rolls or moves quickly, a seat belt could help prevent you from being thrown from the vehicle.

These are a few tips to help keep you safe when you’re on a bus. By keeping an eye out for anything unusual, stowing bags and wearing a seat belt, you’ll stay safer in the event of a crash or potentially be able to prevent one completely. By taking the right actions now, you will help prevent injuries later.
