In our increasingly connected world, portable power banks have become essential accessories for many. These compact devices promise to keep our smartphones, tablets and other gadgets charged on the go. However, recent incidents have raised concerns about their safety, particularly when it comes to fire risks.

Baseus, an electronics company, has announced its recall of more than 130,000 of its wireless charging power banks due to fire hazards.

The company has received 171 incident reports regarding its power banks. There have been 132 reports of bulging or swelling batteries. 39 reports of fires have been recorded. The defective power banks also caused 13 burn injuries and about $20,000 in property damage.

The device models for the recalled power banks are available on the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website. Baseus encourages consumers who have affected products to contact them for a refund. They also requested that consumers dispose of the power banks according to the local and state ordinances.

What makes lithium-ion batteries dangerous?

Lithium-ion batteries are popular in power banks due to their high energy density and lightweight design. However, these batteries can be dangerous if they are defective or handled improperly. These batteries can overheat, catch fire or explode under certain conditions. This risk increases when the battery is damaged, defective or of poor quality.

The high energy density makes these kinds of batteries volatile. When a battery short-circuits, it can release energy rapidly, causing a fire. Overcharging or exposing the battery to high temperatures can also lead to thermal runaway, a chain reaction that produces heat and can result in a fire or explosion.

Proper disposal is also essential for all power banks. The batteries may spill, leak or heat up, which can lead to fires in waste bins. Electronics retailers and local recycling centers offer safe disposal options for these devices.

Legal recourse

It’s crucial to hold manufacturers accountable for the safety of their products. On the other hand, consumers must stay meticulous in choosing brands. They must follow the product guidelines for use and storage to keep the device functional.

If you’ve experienced a fire or injury from an electronic device, seek medical attention. Report the incident to the manufacturer and the local consumer protection agency.  Consulting with a legal professional may help you understand your rights and potential remedies.
