Drivers must be aware of children as they head back to school

On Behalf of | Aug 16, 2023 | Car Accidents

It’s that time of year when many Oklahoma children are heading back to school. For drivers, this means there will be more traffic in the hours before and after school, including school buses and pedestrians near the roads. Drivers should use extra caution when traveling near schools and other areas where children will be present. By following some basic safety tips, motorists can help prevent accidents involving school children.

Stay aware and drive safely

Being aware of one’s surroundings is one of the best ways to prevent a motor vehicle accident. School buses and school zones will use flashing lights to alert drivers that students are going to be in the area. Motorists should drive slowly in school zones and near school bus stops, while always being on the lookout for pedestrians.

When possible, motorists may wish to use a different route to avoid school traffic and to reduce the chances of having an accident. Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of motor vehicle crashes so drivers should avoid using their phones, eating, and doing other tasks that take their attention away from the road. Motorists should be aware of crosswalks and avoid parking on them at a stop sign or traffic light.

Children deserve a safe trip to and from school

Every year, children are injured while traveling to and from school. Many of these accidents could have been prevented if the driver had paid attention and followed the laws. Sadly, children who are injured in a motor vehicle accident can suffer greatly and may require a long recovery time. Accident victims in Oklahoma have the right to seek compensation through a civil lawsuit when a negligent driver caused their injuries.
