Avoiding accidents related to inclement weather

On Behalf of | Feb 17, 2024 | Car Accidents

Road conditions in Oklahoma can get dangerous quickly during inclement weather, and this doesn’t include just snow and ice. Drivers are responsible for driving according to the conditions of the roads and making adjustments to their speed when necessary to prevent accidents. If drivers aren’t cautious when roads become slippery, serious accidents with injuries can happen.

Adjusting for road conditions

Most people are aware of hazards associated with ice and snow, but rain can also contribute to car accidents. When roads initially become wet from rain, the water can mix with oils on the road, creating slippery conditions. Drivers must be aware of these hazards and adjust their speed accordingly. When traveling on slick roads, drivers should maintain a longer distance between themselves and the car in front of them in case they need to stop quickly.

When navigating curves on slippery roads, drivers should slow down and enter curves at a lower rate of speed than normal. Braking in a curve can cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle which is why it’s important to drive slowly so sudden braking isn’t necessary. Drivers should avoid driving through standing water when possible and use their wipers and headlights as needed.

When slippery roads turn dangerous

Unexpected accidents on slippery roads can lead to serious injuries. Oklahoma accident victims may suffer from pain and may need extensive treatment to be able to work again and enjoy activities they participated in before the injuries. Victims who suffered due to the negligence of another driver should know that they have the right to seek compensation from that driver through a personal injury lawsuit. This compensation can help one pay for accident-related expenses.
